A reminder of the exam board's A Grade Criteria:

There is evidence of excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:

  • Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task;

  • showing understanding of conventions of layout and page design;

  • showing awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size;

  • accurately using language and register;

  • using ICT appropriately for the task set;

  • appropriately integrating illustration and text;

  • shooting a variety of material appropriate to the task set;

  • manipulating photographs as appropriate to the context for presentation, including cropping and resizing.

Work to complete over half term


You should have completed you music magazine pitch during lesson time this week.

Over half term you need to:
  1. Gain some audience feedback on your pitch
  2. Produce a style sheet
  3. Create mock-ups / flat plans for all of three magazine pages (front cover, contents page and DPS).

There is a PowerPoint on yourspace / moodle called, 'Pitch Feedback, Style Sheet / Mock-ups' which contains guidance on how you can complete the work.

This week...

Use the blog checklist to help you stay on track. You must any outstanding work from wk commencing 6 Oct & 13 Oct as soon as possible.

In lesson time we will be working on your pitches.
To complete your music magazine pitch:

1. Look at the good student examples below and identify the different elements that they have include in their pitches.

2. Use the 'Pitch and Audience' hand-out on yourspace / moodle to help you complete your own pitch.

The Main Task!



The Brief:
Produce the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine
All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate), minimum of FOUR images per candidate.

You will be assessed on three areas:
1. Research and Planning = 20 marks
2. Production = 60 marks 
3. Evaluation = 20 marks

Use the student blogs to identify the different types of tasks you will need to complete for each area.

Prelim Task: Research and Planning Tasks to Complete

Research and planning tasks to complete by next week:

1. Set up your blog and email your blog address - my email is cottrelll@hlcollege.ac.uk.
This is the address that you see when your on the homepage of your blog.

2. Write your first blog post – Introduction to Preliminary Task and Action Plan for Preliminary Task
In your post briefly introduce what you have to do for the task and outline what you are going to be doing each week. The work flow on the first page of this h-out can help you complete the plan.

3. Post your work on the generic conventions of student magazines. This is the work that we did on A3 paper during the lesson. You now need to figure out how you are going to get the A3 piece of paper on to your blogs!

4. Complete your textual analysis of a student magazine, that you started during the lesson, and post it on your blogs. If in doubt refer to the handout I gave you during the lesson which includes a good -ish.

You need to bring a colour print out of this to our double lesson next week (either Tues Pool C or Thurs Pool D)

8. Mock-ups



All of theses tasks need to be complete by:

Preliminary Task Brief


Using Desk Top Publishing and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
